LET'S WORK TOGETHER!

Follow these six simple steps to get started finishing your quilt!

1

Prep your backing fabric

If you have prewashed or starched your quilt top fabric, you will want to preshrink your backing fabric as well.  There is no need to starch it, but washing and ironing will help ensure that your finished quilt launders evenly.  This is especially important with flannel backings, which are notorious for shrinking noticeably.

2

Seam your backing if necessary

If a seam is necessary to create an appropriately-sized backing, trim off the selvages before making a seam using a minimum of 1/2" seam allowance.  I prefer to press my seam open to reduce bulk, but if you prefer, you may press to one side.  Your entire backing fabric should be pressed after seaming to ensure accurate measuring and cutting.

3

Cut your backing

Backing fabric needs to be a minimum of 8" wider and 8" longer than your quilt top.  It can be larger, but not smaller.  This extra allows the quilt to be properly loaded onto the frame.  Example:  If your quilt is 60" x 80", your backing needs to be at least 68" x 88".  Be aware of directional prints (both top and backing) and plan accordingly, marking the top with a safety pin.

4

Prepare your quilt top

Give your quilt top a good pressing, checking for popped seams, flipped or insufficient seam allowances, or piecing issues you may want to correct.  It is also a good idea to trim raveling or stray threads, especially dark threads that may show through light fabrics.  I want your quilt to look great, so take your time with this!

5

Choose quilting and thread

It can be a big decision to choose between so many quilting and thread options.  If you feel overwhelmed by the task, I am happy to make suggestions.  Sometimes the intended use or recipient dictates what will work well, while other times the fabric or quilt pattern begs for a particular style.  In the end, you will have a beautiful quilt!
